About Us

Amsterdam Press' Mission:
Somewhere in between the horrifyingly confessional and the boringly universal, there's good, simple stuff like glue and string and ink and paper. That's where we are.  We love a little bit of whimsy, but we're suspicious of sugar coatings and glamour and things that are too shiny. Things around here are done by hand. There's a certain amount of grittiness involved, yes, but we like things better that way. We're about honesty. We hope you'll appreciate that.

Who we are:
Editor in Chief/ Gob Pile Chapbook Series Editor: Cindy M. Kelly
Collaborating Editor:  Laura Wackerly

Artistic Director: Edith Dinger-Wadkins
Plain Spoke Poetry Editor: Cindy Kelly

Plain Spoke Fiction Editor: Shaun Barcalow

What we do:
Amsterdam Press is a tiny publishing house unconventionally situated in one of the smallest towns you've never visited.  The press The press was founded in 2007 as a means to publish Plain Spoke, a literary magazine that focuses on good, simple poetry, short stories, and essays, especially those grounded firmly in place, with an emphasis on what is Appalachian and Americana.

While our focus is on literature, poetry, folk art, and stories that center or touch on the Appalachian spirit or region, we are open-minded and we know good work when we see it. We do not have any loyalties to any one school or style or salon of writers. Rather, we like the varied spectrum and eclectic results of letting things happen as they will.
